Hasbro R2-D2 Restoration

The droid awakens

A flood-damaged 2002 voice-activated R2-D2 rebuilt from the motors up with modern control electronics, sound, lights, and more power.

Hasbro R2-D2 Restoration — Hasbro / Star Wars

A 2002 Hasbro Star Wars R2-D2 Voice Activated Interactive Astromech Droid arrived after years in storage—and one final stay in a flooded cellar. Corrosion had spread too far through the original electronics to save them. Only the leg motors still answered.

The rebuild started from that surviving movement. I replaced the wiring and control system with new motor drivers and a Teensy 4.0, creating a modern nervous system for the drive motors, head servo, sound, lighting, and future mechanisms. A LiPo battery now provides more power and endurance, while a new servo setup gives the dome precise rotation.

R2-D2 moves and speaks again. The next phase is recreating the film-accurate lighting sequences—and, with plenty of room still inside the shell, perhaps giving the droid a real AI personality before sending him back to the office.
